The land once belonged to a man named James Parker as payment for his time served in the Revolutionary War. Parker’s lot was then divided and new settlers moved into the area creating a village called Middlebury, as the settlers were from Middlebury, Connecticut. Thomas Hall started a gathering place and area to drop off mail, now he just needed a post office. The village began to grow and gain traction. With the help of Judge Thomas Watkins Powell, the town applied for and received a post office and the village was renamed Powell.
