How do you determine what floor plan is best for you? We have put together some tips for helping you decide what floor plan will become your dream home.

1. Know Your Lifestyle

One of the first things you will want to consider is your lifestyle. Think about the things you will want to be able to enjoy in your home and what really fits your needs. Do you like to entertain? Is family movie night a priority? Do you like to cook? Does your family have formal meals together or are you more eat on the go? When you think about how you will be actually living in your home, it’s easier to picture the type of spaces you will want. One of the great things about building your own home is you can adapt it to your specific lifestyle.

2. List Your Needs/Must-Haves

Create a list of your needs and must-haves with the other decision-makers in your home. Keep this list with you through your decision-making process. Make sure that these items are always accommodated for when selecting your floor plan. It is easy to get caught up in all of the details of the floor plans, you will always want to make sure your basic wants and needs are met in the floor plan you select.

3. Determine Size

When you have a clear idea of your lifestyle and your needs, it’s easier to determine the size of the home you will need. If you love to cook, have 3 kids, and work from home you will probably want a spacious kitchen and a 4 bedroom floor plan with a den or flex space to accommodate your family and your lifestyle.

4. Consider Personalities

When thinking about your floor plan, think about the personalities of those living in the house. Do you or another family member like a lot of privacy? Selecting a floor plan with a master suite set farther apart from the other rooms in the home might be a good fit for you. Do you have young children that you want to constantly keep an eye on? An open floor plan in which you can see their play space easily would be ideal for you. Do you have teenagers who like to stay up late playing video games? You will want a space far from the other bedrooms to accommodate them.

5. How Much Outdoor Living Do You Do?

Outdoor space can be just as important to consider as your indoor space. When looking at your floor plan and considering the layout of your lot, make sure you will be happy with what your outdoor space looks like and how accessible it is from the key areas of your home. If you want to be able to look out into your backyard while cooking dinner, choose a floor plan with the kitchen facing the back of the home. If you like to entertain outside, make sure you can easily get from your kitchen to your outside patio.

6. Your Future in Your Home

Many people plan to live in their home for several years, especially when building their dream home. Think about your personal timeline and what your life will look like in 5-10 years. You may not have children now, but do you think you will in the future? Perhaps your children will be going off to college in 5 years, what does that mean for your home? Could you need special accommodations as you age? Do you want space for your grandchildren to spend the night? Make sure your home is perfect for you not just today but also can grow with you in the future.

7. What are You Missing in Your Current Home?

One of the best ways to determine what you want in your new home is to think about what is missing in your current home. If you are looking for a new home, you likely have already determined that your current one is not meeting your needs in some way. Define what these things are and choose a floor plan that gives you what you are looking for. We want to make sure whatever floor plan you choose, you will love living in your home for years to come.
